The Final Work of Every Minister: Leading Believers to the Holy Spirit
Why God gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers—and why every believer must ultimately learn to walk under the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
I was as shocked as you may be when this truth first began to unfold before me.
For many years I believed that pastors, teachers, prophets, evangelists and apostles would always remain the primary source of a believer's spiritual growth.
But as I continued studying Scripture and walking with the Holy Spirit, I began seeing something much deeper.
They are God's provision for the journey.
Christ Gave the Ministry Gifts for a Purpose
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ."
— Ephesians 4:10–13
There is absolutely no question that these ministries are gifts from Christ Himself.
Throughout history they have strengthened the Church, preached the Gospel, corrected error, established believers and built the Body of Christ.
Yet Paul does something very important in this passage.
He not only tells us who Christ gave.
He also tells us why He gave them.
- To equip the saints.
- To prepare believers for ministry.
- To build up the Body of Christ.
- To bring believers into unity.
- To help believers reach spiritual maturity.
- To lead believers into the fullness of Christ.
Not permanent dependence.
God's Pattern Has Always Been Progression
One thing becomes very clear when reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.
God has always been moving mankind closer to Himself.
Before sin entered the world, Adam enjoyed direct fellowship with God.
There were no priests.
No prophets.
No human mediators.
God Himself walked with man.
But after mankind fell, separation entered the picture.
God began speaking through prophets.
He established priests.
He gave Israel the Law through Moses.
These were not God's original design.
They became necessary because humanity had lost direct fellowship with its Creator.
Yet even then, these were never meant to be God's final solution.
— Galatians 3:24
Everything under the Old Covenant was pointing toward something greater.
Someone greater.
Jesus Christ.
Christ Fulfilled What Came Before
When Jesus came, He fulfilled the Law.
He became the perfect sacrifice.
He became our eternal High Priest.
Through His death and resurrection, He restored access to the Father that humanity had lost in Eden.
The cross was not simply about forgiveness.
It was about restoring fellowship.
This is where many believers stop.
But Jesus was not finished.
Before leaving the earth, He promised something even greater.
He promised that the Holy Spirit Himself would come to dwell within every believer.

The Final Work of Every Minister
Part 2 — The Holy Spirit: God's Direct Connection With Every Believer
Jesus Opened Direct Access to the Father
Before Jesus returned to heaven, His disciples were troubled because they could not understand why He had to leave them.
They had walked with Him.
They had heard His teachings.
They had witnessed His miracles.
To them, losing His physical presence seemed like losing everything.
But Jesus revealed something far greater was coming.
"When He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth."
— John 16:7,13
This statement reveals something powerful.
Jesus did not leave His followers without guidance.
He did not replace Himself with another human leader.
He sent the Holy Spirit.
The greatest gift was His Spirit living within His people.
The Holy Spirit: The Gift Above All Gifts
When Peter preached on the day of Pentecost, thousands responded to the message of Christ.
— Acts 2:38
Notice carefully what Peter promised.
He did not say:
"You will receive a permanent human guide."
He said:
The Holy Spirit Himself is the source of wisdom, understanding, power and every spiritual ability needed to accomplish God's purpose.
The ministries of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers are not independent sources of power.
They are expressions of the Holy Spirit working through people.
The Spirit Gives More Than Spiritual Gifts
Sometimes people limit the work of the Holy Spirit only to preaching, prophecy or miracles.
But Scripture shows us that the Spirit of God also gives wisdom, creativity, knowledge and practical abilities.
We see this clearly when God chose Bezalel to build the Tabernacle.
— Exodus 31:1–5
The Holy Spirit gave Bezalel ability to:
- Create artistic designs.
- Work with gold, silver and bronze.
- Cut and arrange precious stones.
- Work with wood.
- Perform skilled craftsmanship.
He empowers people to fulfill God's assignment in every area of life.
Every Believer Can Be Used By The Spirit
As a person grows in relationship with the Holy Spirit, something beautiful begins to happen.
The believer begins to understand that the Spirit is not limited to one office or one function.
At one moment, the Spirit may lead someone to teach.
At another moment, He may lead the same person to encourage, evangelize, serve or provide wisdom.
The assignment changes according to God's purpose.
The source remains the same.
The gift is the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit distributes His work according to God's will.
Therefore, ministry offices should never become replacements for personal fellowship with God.
Why God Uses Ministers
If every believer receives the Holy Spirit, why then did Christ give apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers?
Because God uses people to prepare people.
Their role is to:
- Introduce people to Christ.
- Teach believers the foundation of faith.
- Strengthen the weak.
- Encourage spiritual growth.
- Equip believers for their own assignment.
A true minister does not create dependence on himself.
A true minister helps believers discover their dependence on Christ.
The Final Work of Every Minister
Part 3 — The Holy Spirit, Spiritual Maturity and the Danger of False Voices
The Danger of Permanent Dependence on Human Voices
One of the greatest dangers facing believers in the last days is not only false teaching.
It is the inability to recognize the voice of God personally.
Jesus warned His disciples that deception would become one of the greatest challenges before His return.
— Matthew 24:24
Notice the seriousness of this warning.
Jesus did not say deception would only affect unbelievers.
He said even the elect could be targeted.
Those who have believed.
Those who belong to God.
Those who have received Christ.
This is why every believer must grow from simply hearing about God to personally knowing God.
The Purpose of Every Minister: To Decrease While Christ Increases
John the Baptist understood the true purpose of ministry.
— John 3:30
This should be the heart of every genuine servant of God.
A pastor should not build followers around himself.
A teacher should not replace the Holy Spirit.
An evangelist should not become the destination after introducing people to Christ.
A prophet should not take the place of God's personal guidance.
The greatest success is when people become deeply connected to Christ.
Jesus Remains the Only True Teacher
Jesus spoke directly about the danger of misplaced spiritual dependence.
Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven."
— Matthew 23:8–9
The context of this passage was humility and the warning against religious pride.
However, it also reveals a deeper truth:
Every human teacher must always point beyond himself to Christ.
Every spiritual leader must remember that Christ alone holds the highest position in the believer's life.
Returning to God's Original Design
When God created Adam, there was direct fellowship between God and man.
There was no religious system separating humanity from its Creator.
There was relationship.
There was communion.
There was God's voice.
Sin damaged that relationship.
Throughout history God used prophets, priests and the Law to guide mankind.
But everything was pointing toward restoration.
That restoration came through Jesus Christ.
The cross restored our access to the Father.
And after completing His work, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit so believers could once again walk with God personally.
The Final Output of Every Believer
The goal of Christianity is not lifelong dependence on a human minister.
The goal is maturity in Christ.
It is becoming a son or daughter who knows the Father's voice.
It is learning to walk under the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
It is being transformed into the image of Christ.
— 1 John 2:20
God has already prepared the answer for the deception of the last days.
He did not leave His people without guidance.
He gave us His Spirit.
He created a direct channel between Himself and His children.
Final Thought
God is always many steps ahead of the plans of the enemy.
Before deception increases, God has already provided His people with His Spirit.
Before false voices rise, God has already given believers the ability to know His voice.
The ministry gifts are precious gifts from Christ.
But their ultimate purpose is fulfilled when believers are established in Christ, guided by the Holy Spirit, and able to walk personally with their Father.
"He must increase, but I must decrease."
