The Law of Moses, the love letter in diguise??

Faith • Law • Spirit

The Law Was Good — God Gave It to Protect Fallen Man

The Law was never God's mistake. It was His protection for a humanity that had fallen.

I know. I know. There are so many laws and commandments in the Bible that they can seem impossible to fulfil. Some may even appear harsh or demanding.

But why was the Law given in the first place?

The Law was not bad. It was good. It was God's protection for a fallen humanity.

We were not originally created to live by constantly determining what is good and evil. We were created to live by God's Word and God's Spirit.

Think about the knowledge of good and evil. What appears harmless today may produce something terrible tomorrow. A child may seem innocent today and become a ruthless dictator years later.

Only God sees the entire picture — today, tomorrow, and beyond.

After humanity's fall, however, we lost our ability to live naturally from that spiritual relationship with God. Humanity became increasingly dependent on external direction.

And this is where the Law came in.

The Purpose of the Law

The Law was God teaching fallen humanity how to live.

It taught people what to eat, how to treat one another, how to worship, how to rest, how to govern themselves, and how to avoid destroying one another.

In other words, the Law was protecting, not killing.

Even the Sabbath Was for Man

Consider the Sabbath.

God commanded His people to rest. Was God tired and asking humanity to give Him a day off?

Of course not.

“He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”

Psalm 121:4

Jesus later said:

“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”

Mark 2:27

There it is.

The Sabbath was a gift of protection.

God understood something humanity often forgets: our bodies need rest.

A toddler may hate being told to sleep. To the child, the parent is simply preventing him from playing. But the parent knows what the child doesn't know.

That is how some of the Law may have appeared to Israel.

“Why can't we do this?”
“Why must we do that?”

Because God was protecting them.

The Law was like a parent putting boundaries around a child who wasn't yet mature enough to understand everything the parent understood.

But the Law Was Never the Destination

This is where the story becomes even more beautiful.

God's ultimate intention was never to have His children permanently governed by external rules.

He wanted them to become Spirit-led.

The Law

The Law could tell you what to do. It could restrain your actions from the outside.

The Spirit

The Spirit transforms your heart from the inside and teaches you to live from God's nature.

The Law could say, “Do not murder.”

The Spirit teaches you to love.

The Law could say, “Do not steal.”

The Spirit teaches you generosity.

The Law could restrain you from the outside.

The Spirit transforms you from the inside.

“If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”

Galatians 5:18

The Law Was Good

So the Law was not God's mistake.

It was God's provision for fallen humanity.

It was good. It protected. It restrained. It taught. It preserved.

But Christ came to take humanity somewhere greater — not merely to become better at following rules, but to walk by the Spirit again.

The Destination Was Always Greater

The destination was never simply “know the Law.”

Know God.
Walk with God.
Be led by the Spirit.
Live as sons who know the Father's heart.
The Law was good.
But the Spirit was always the goal.
