Why Did Jesus Preach the Gospel to the Poor?
— Luke 4:18
This Scripture has made me wonder for a long time.
We all know that the Gospel is for everyone, and Jesus came for everyone. So why, in this declaration of His mission, did He specifically mention the poor?
I believe the Gospel provides three things vital to a man:
1. Salvation
Salvation repairs the severed relationship between man and God. It bridges the gap completely, allowing man not only to receive pardon for his sins but also to come out from under the power of darkness.
Salvation simply means salvation from all—from sin, darkness, separation and the powers that have held man captive, even in his mind.
2. Adoption
Adoption fixes a man's identity crisis.
A man can move from being nobody to becoming a son of the King.
And when identity changes, the way a man sees provision changes too.
Instead of spending his life desperately trying to have everything, he discovers that he has a Father who knows what he needs.
— Psalm 23:1
The burden of provision is no longer entirely his responsibility. He enters into the Father's provision and, ultimately, into His rest.
— Matthew 11:28
3. Eternal Life
Eternal life answers the question of time.
The sons of men are constantly hurrying because they believe they have only this life to accomplish everything they want to accomplish.
But when you receive eternal life, this world becomes only part of your existence.
Physical death is no longer the end.
Stephen died, but death did not end his story. He simply fell asleep awaiting the resurrection.
— Acts 7:54-60
That changes how a man lives.
He no longer has to live desperately because he knows eternity is ahead of him.
So, Why the Poor?
Perhaps Jesus was not merely talking about people who lack money.
The Gospel is good news to the poor because it answers the deepest poverty of man.
Salvation gives him back his relationship with God.
Adoption gives him back his identity.
Eternal life gives him back his future.
And suddenly, the man who had nothing discovers that in Christ, he has a Father, he has a home, and he has eternity.
That is why the Gospel is truly good news to the poor.
