why the Tithe Was Never Really About 10% | Understanding Tithing in the New Covenant

The Tithe Was Never Really About 10%

The deeper question behind the tithe is not simply how much we give God, but whether we recognize that everything we have ultimately belongs to Him.

“A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD.”

Leviticus 27:30

God instructed Israel to give a tenth of the produce of the land. But the tithe was about more than a percentage. It was part of a much bigger lesson: God wanted His people to remember Him in everything.

The Law touched almost every area of life because God was teaching His people to live with an awareness of Him. Their work, harvest, possessions, relationships and worship were not separate from God.

God Wanted to Be Remembered

A farmer could easily look at his harvest and think, “I produced this.”

The tithe was a reminder that although he planted and worked, God was ultimately the source of the harvest.

“The tithe was not because God needed the harvest. It was because man needed to remember the One who gave it.”

Without that reminder, it is easy for us to begin believing that our strength, intelligence, work and ability are the ultimate reasons we have what we have.

Then Everything Changed at the Cross

Humanity rebelled against God, and sin brought separation and death. But God did not simply demand something from us. He gave Himself for us.

Through Christ, God paid the price for our rebellion and opened the way for us to become His children again.

“You were bought at a price.”
1 Corinthians 6:19–20

From 10% to 100%

This is where the New Covenant changes the conversation.

10% A reminder of God's ownership
100% A life surrendered to God

The Gospel does not simply increase the percentage we give. It changes the question of ownership.

The question is no longer simply, “How much should I give God?”

The New Covenant Question “What do I have that does not belong to God?”

The Difference Is Ownership

Under the Law

“Give God a tenth and remember that everything comes from Him.”

Under the New Covenant

“You have been bought with a price. Your entire life belongs to Him.”

This does not mean that giving 10% is wrong. It can still be a meaningful discipline and a practical expression of generosity.

But the New Testament does not reduce Christian giving to a mathematical transaction. Paul teaches believers to give according to what they have decided in their hearts, willingly and without compulsion.

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion.”
2 Corinthians 9:7

God Doesn't Want Just Your Tenth

Perhaps this is what makes the Gospel so radical.

God is not ultimately looking for 10% of your money. He wants you.

My money His
My business His
My career His
My abilities His
My time His
My future His
My life His

Romans 12:1 calls believers to offer their bodies as a living sacrifice to God.

That is not 10%.

The Bigger Picture

Not From 10% to 20%

The Gospel takes us from 10% to 100%. Not necessarily 100% given away, but 100% surrendered.

The question is no longer, “How little can I give and still satisfy God?”

It becomes: “Lord, everything I have is Yours. Show me how You want me to use it.”
